sweetcorn - preparing the soil
« on: April 25, 2010, 14:10 »
I dug over most of the patch I have set aside for sweetcorn a few months ago but I still have some purple sprouting broccoli on it that I have almost finished harvesting. Once i pull that out in a a few weeks, should I put manure into the soil and work it in to prepare the sweetcorn bed or anything else?

Seeds were sown a few weeks ago and are decent sized plants at the moment in the greenhouse but they wont be going in the ground until the end of May.

I'd add the manure as sweetcorn is a very heavy feeder and if you want to add a little high nitrogen fertilizer, that will also help. Work it all in well for the tilth so that if it's a dry summer, the corn will still do well.

I agree with Trillium - they are very heavy feeders so get manure into their bed in autumn then add more as a mulch once planted.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
