Will sunlight get through fleece?
« on: April 20, 2010, 14:01 »
Got a fleece liner for my plastic greenhouse - just leaving it on at the moment due to cold, and a knackered back!  Have some seedlings on the go inside - will they be getting enough light do you think?

It is in south facing position and in full sun.

Cheers

Yes, they will get light but not direct sunlight. In the snug confines of fleece you don't want them cooking so diffused light is still good and they'll keep growing.

I have a four shelf mini growhouse in my unheated greenhouse with a Wilko fleece cover on to diffuse the sunlight and it works well. I would leave it open during the day so they don't get overheated but zip it up at night.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thx, perfect!  Good tip on opening it up in day - its freezing outside today, but just checked the greenhouse and its roasting!  Wonder how cold it will get at night, would be good to get at least some toms out of the kitchen soon...

Glad it helped. My mini has a clear cover that came with it which is under the fleece cover from Wilko that is slightly bigger. I have kept them both on but have the "doors" open at night unless it forecasts frost. Being small, the temp variation between night and day will be bigger in a mini on its own than in an unheated greenhouse - both together seems to be working for me so far. You could always buy some fleece to provide more cover at night. Even here, in north Lancs, the winds have been so cold today that I haven't done any gardening outside at all despite lovely sunshine. I potted my toms up in their final pots today but I know that the temp variation will slow them down a bit and it has already started to discolour some of the bottom leaves with purplish spots but the rest of the leaves look fine.

Yea, I have a plastic cover too.  Wish I had a proper greenhouse to put the piddly plastic one in!  I've put a well established chilli plant in to see how it fairs - call me cruel, but I've loads of chillies on the go  :tongue2:  If it survives the frosts forecast for the next few nights, some toms will be going in at the weekend!

I have all my seeds in pots outside in plastic greenhouses, I have been keeping them sealed all day and have had temperatures in high teens, I thought the hotter the better, is that wrong?

probably depends what you are growing - i cant imagine it getting too hot for much at the moment, but I wouldnt be keeping hardy veg in there too long (brassicas etc) or they might get leggy.  The benefit of starting seeds in them from the start like you have done is that you wont have too much trouble hardening off.  Thats what I am doing with my celery, lettuce and sweet pea seedlings etc. Whereas my toms and chillies grown inside are in for a shock sooner or later
