BIG mistake
« on: April 19, 2010, 21:47 »
I was trying to tie in one of my tomato plants to it's stake, and I must have pulled too hard, because i snapped it's stem.

It's not broken off completely, do you think it will survive?  Or is it dead ??

I'm GUTTED because it was a beefsteak tomato plant that was doing really well at about a foot tall.

It's easily done.  You might be ok, just tie it upright to a stake and give it time.  :)
Cheese makes everything better.

I did this to my quince late last year  :( I bound the split with some garden wire and its knitted itself back together  :D

If you can find a side shoot you could try potting that up, if not you're not too late to plant a few more seeds.

If the stem is not too big and breaks off completly the take off a few lower leaves and stick it in a pot,it will root and grow.

This is also a good way to increase the number of plants if you need more and don't have time to wait for new seedlings.... I discovered this more by chance than design  ::)

Just like Lardman says, my mum told me that my grandmother used to sellotape broken stems/branches back together. Like a broken bone, plants often heal themselves if you give them a helping hand. I tried this with a gooseberry bush stem last year which snapped on the car journey home from the garden centre - it did work.

What with sticking my finger in the ground to check soil temperatures, worrying about nutrition and turning & checking leaves for bug & aphid infestations, I've not got as far as going round the garden or plot  wearing a white coat & stethoscope, but I'm sure it'll come to that...
