Pea mistake maybe?
« on: April 10, 2012, 21:10 »
I think I got the planting wrong when I put these peas in by reading some advise wrongly off here!! (Totally my fault!)  ::)

Are these too close together and if so can they be moved about without affecting the plants?

Kelvedon peas about 70 plants in 2 rows in clusters of 4/5

Sugarsnap about 35 plants in one row spaced about 2" between each plant in clusters

I'm going to sow the next lot directly into the ground and try and stop the mice getting to them with the netting,

Cheers

hmmm i wouldn't plant them in clusters personally as they may be some competition between the plants - however i think DD advises around 2 inches per individual plant - but if ive got any left over i just cram them in.

3" between plants in a triple row also 3" apart.

You may have to leave these, but Matt - don't cram things in, the yield suffers as the plants compete for nutrients and light.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ok i'll leave em be and learn from the mistake of growing 4 or 5 together in pots and not splitting them when planting out!!

Thanks again

i know i shouldn't - but it seems to be such a waste throwing the plants away (which i would have to do as ive got no more room for them - and last year i got a great crop - so i cant be doing them much harm)

Message to DD... Sorry to hijack but today I planted some of the Stokesley you sent me.. I soaked them overnight but did a few too many so my plan is once they are up is to pull a few that the mice and birds leave to not overcrowd too much.. would this be advisable.. I have grown them at home so I can reap seed without any cross pollination at the plot.

the better idea is to take the peashoots and have a salad (thinning in a good way?)

There is a tiny, tiny chance, but generally not. They are self fertile within an enclosed flower.
