Cable ties for wire netting
« on: April 06, 2010, 21:01 »
Forgve me if this has been mentioned before.
I've just been fixing some wire netting onto poles, with staples, to enlarge a chicken run, dropped some and, as always hit my finger when knockng  them in.
A passer by suggested 12 inch cable ties to fix the wire to the post. They cost about 2p each when bought by the hundred and can be cut off if I need to move the fence
Saved me time and bruised thumbs.

I have used these on many occasions and for many things.... including what you want to  use them for :)

They do look a little unsightly but mine were bright yellow :( the black ones were much better :)

I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

i use them, but just be careful of the quality you buy, some of them when they get wet, and then have a hot summer can become very brittle and snap by themselves!

I had a similar problem with staples but someone showed me a way to do it by using some long nosed pliers to hold the staples.  No more bruised fingers and staples that flew off in all directions. :)

I do love cable ties though.  You can fix almost anything with cable ties, duck tape or nails. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

A good tip Fen!  We used cable ties to hold the four sides together on the chicken run when we were putting it up.  Worked a treat!  I also used them to supplement the run clips on my Eglu run - personally think they work better than their run clips which are very fiddly to get on and off!

They're great, but not always what you want for a tight wire. Try getting a few strips of card or thick paper and push the staple through it. Not only are your fingers safe, but you can see what you're aiming at.  If you've a fair bit of netting then a staple gun might be a good investment. They're £20+ but you can use them for different types of staples, you can hold the netting tight whilst firing the staple in with the other hand and you don't have the problem of damaging fence posts or netting with the hammer.

Thank you EHS!  I am being very thick this morning and couldn't work out how the OP and Ice both had to work out ways to hold staples!  I now realise that not everyone uses staple guns, oh I hope this isn't a sign for the rest of the day!

Must admit though, staple gun was easy, yes cost a bit (about £20 as stated above including staples) but works really well.

ice u beat me to it   , always use long nose pliers to hold the rounded end of the staple then gentle hit with hammer until its firmly in place remove the pliers  then u can hit the staple in properly without hurting yourself  i must of used about 1,500 staples for my run ohhhhhhh the poor pliers did suffer  :tongue2:
