Peas
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:35 »
Hi,

Was wondering if its possible to keep peas growing in a gutter?  Or do they need to spread their roots?
We sow the seeds, nature grows the seeds, we eat the seeds.

A standard gutter wont be deep enough. They need to go into the ground or deepish pots

Ah - now I have always done it in guttering as Geoff Hamilton recommended to avoid mice eating the seeds. I know that peas need deep rooting but it has worked for me but, once several inches high, I slide them out sidewards over the edges instead of down the guttering length. I start them off in a cold greenhouse. If I did try them in pots, can I separate them when planting them out...?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My peas are in the greenhouse growing in cells - 24 cells to the seed tray - two peas per cell in opposite corners.  When they have four leaves they go out to the coldframe to harden of and will be planted out early April.  Should have a crop of these first earlies by mid June.

I have grown them in gutters before - but they need deep well dug ground to prosper.

Good luck
