Here in the US to help keep costs down the big producers are sending broilers to slaughter earlier. I don't know how it is in the UK but the producers here are just a part of a much larger corporation so they can easily move money around to cover the costs.
next time you are in a supermarket have a look in the freezer section at the bags of chicken legs/breast/fajita pieces etc and none come from britain. Brazil, poland, thailand even china. What the hell are we doing importing from countries where animal welfare is considered zero on the ladder of ethics. I made sure everyone around me knew of it. Most were as upset as I was. We have good farmers with high welfare standards. Its a disgrace

Those of you that think it's ok to rear animals in this way need to read Farmagedon. Now that's an eye opener. What's wrong with eating less meat and more veggies anyway. Buy the more expensive free range, eat it less often and grow your own veg. to eat more of that. We dont have to eat meat with every meal. Meat should be expensive, after all an animal has died so that you can have it.

No, it isnt right to rear animals this way, in the UK we have very different rules from other countries, I have worked on farms, I am happy with the way we rear anfd kill our animals

I am also happy with the way I rear and kill my hens (when I have to)

We cant stand up and tell other countries how they rear their animals or kill them, we kill our animals humanely, their are religions out there there that cut their throats and just let them bleed out, to me that is not humane

I dont eat meat with every meal (I couldnt afford to) I have cooked and ate plenty of vegetarian meals, the 'fussy eaters' are those that get on my nerves, if you dont like it, just pick it out
It's all about the journey, not the destination

Unfortunately now plenty of supermarkets sell unethically slaughtered meat for general consumption and it doesn't have to be labelled as such.  >:(

well that is easily sorted, just buy from places you know where their mat comes from, farm shops, local butchers

May not be able to do that if you are on a low income (I'm on a pension, but I still buy ethically killed meat, but thatrs is just me)
