Seed potatoes too early
« on: December 11, 2009, 17:16 »
My seed potatoes arrived today - way too early for my liking.

What's the advice here? Store them in the loft space in the cold and dark or are they still likely to start chitting there? Any other alternative store is cold but light.

Wasn't wanting to start them off until Feb time.

Cold, dark and frost-free.

Check periodically for rot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've just got mine today as well :D.  They will be going in the shed on the lottie, in a nice dark cupboard .  They came in a box, and all I do is take them out so they have air circulating around them.  I'll take half a dozen out at beginning of January to start them chitting, and put them into bags then into the greenhouse, to get a really early crop at, hopefully, mid to end of March ;)

I will be selecting mine about 2nd week in Jan. Then they will be stored in trays in the conservatory - light airy and cold. They will sprout when they are ready but probably not before March and then short fat shoots.
If stored in the dark there is a risk that I fortget them and they then produce long white shoots - not what you want

Certainly store them in a cool and frost free place. It will not matter if it is light or dark until they start to chit. They will then need light to keep the sprouts short.
