Non-movable crops
« on: December 10, 2009, 21:28 »
Hello

I am just in the process of setting up my plot and I was wondering what crops will stay in the same place for years.

Would I be right in thinking some are Rhubarb, Asparagus, Blackcurrant?

I did some searches as I imagine this topic has been discussed before but I guess I wasn't using the right key words?!

Thanks

Ant

asparagus definitely. probably rhubarb too. don't know about blackcurrant but once planted i'd leave them too. so yes, don't move any of them.

Gooseberrries, mint, jerusalem artichokes.....

gooseberries same as blackcurrants, mint cos it needs root restriction or it'll run wild so a big pot sunk in, JA's cos they'll always come up in the same place anyway so you mifht as well just go with it.....

Try doing a search for perennials - they're plants that have a lifecycle of more than 2 years - as opposed to annuals which crop or flower within 1 year, or biennials which you plant one year, and they'll crop/flower the next.

Lots of herbs are perennials, though some are best re-planted each year - depends. Ones I know you'd leave be are rosemary, chives, bay, sage. Rocket is one of those best ripped up and re-sown the following year I think.

Most of the soft fruits are perennials as far as I know - inc strawberries, raspberries, currants. Definitely rhubarb.

Add Comfrey to the list, but make sure that you plant it in the right place to start with. If you decide to move it it's just about impossible to get all the bits of root out.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

strawberries stay in the same place for more than one.  Can't remember exactly how long but I think the advice is to move it about every three years.

Loubs, your technical word advice is very much appreciated.

I know these words, just not what each mean!

I will do some further researching on perennials

I have Rhubarb, Jerusalem and Globe artichokes on the end of each of my rotation beds - because I only give each a 4' square "end" of the bed.

Raspberries, Currents & Blackberries, Strawberries and Asparagus each have a bed to themselves (the Currents and Blackberries share one :) )
