« on: October 11, 2009, 13:26 »
Hi all     I  planted my broad  beans   about 5 weeks  ago.   they have really grown  they are about  12-13  inchs tall   now   some have started to flower.
Should i   pick the tips  and flowers  to try and stop the plant  from getting to legee  and help them bush out.   Michael

If these are for next year, Im wondering if you planted too early?  Having said that, I cut back the ones I grew from seed in spring a month ago (all the way to the ground) and in that time they have grown back and have started more bean pods!

Your best bet is to pull them up and resow. The next 3 weeks are the right time to sow. Put them in 3/4 inches deep. They will take some time to emerge but by Christmas they should be just emerged above the soil. These small plants will sit like that until the first hint of Spring when they will grow away rapidly. Put a few spares at the end of the row or in a pot in case the mice steal some.

Now they're growing I would be inclined to pinch out the growing points and hope for the best. They will slow down their growth anyway as the days get shorter. Just be aware of the wind damage possibility.

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
