POL Black Rocks in Wakefield?
« on: September 14, 2009, 18:15 »
Hi everyone!

We finally got our 4 new chickens (which should have been 3, you know how it is..) on Saturday and put all 7 on our allotment.

However, we have had an escapee - a lovely little speckledy hen  :(

My daughter is distraught as out of the 4 new chooks, the Speckledy and the Black Rock are the ones which seem to quite enjoy the fuss from both kids, and she had chosen the speckledy as her 'pet'.

We have triple proofed the run (grrrr...I TOLD him the wire mesh was too wide, but anyway...) and I'm looking at possibly getting another Black Rock, as this noe seems particularly friendly with the kids. Is that normal? I'd read they were quite flighty?? Or is it down to personality rather than breed would you say?

Anyway, I'm keen to get a Black Rock locally, does anyone know of anywhere in Wakefield or roundabout please? We got the other 4 from Storrs poultry, £12 each (hybrids(), I'm hoping that we can find a Black Rock for a bit less than that closer to home.

Thanks for any advice on that everyone!
Best wishes

My blackrock is also very friendly, not flighty at all. Personally I don't think £12 for a pol blackrock was a bad price.  :D

I've got 3 Black Rocks and they're very friendly.  I paid £25 each for mine, all vaccinated etc.  Excellent layers and I believe they are the hardiest of chickens.  I get 6 eggs a week from each of my hens, even over winter, which surprised me.  They were POLs last September.

Ooooh, so I DID get a bargain, lol! I will tell my husband - he went a bit grey when we totted it all up  ::)

I wish we'd gone for all Black Rocks now...the Bluebelle and the Sussex Star are taking some getting round. The speckledy was sooo lovely...sob.  :( Live and learn though I suppose.

My Mum reminded me about Penistone auction on Saturday but I'm not sure I dare tbh....bearing in mind we only want one or two more. I'm a sucker for a sob story and when they're in those little cages at the auctions, they look so needy! Lol!

Will maybe try the auction then go back to Storrs if we don't get lucky.

Damn, these chickens are addictive aren't they!!!!!

Thanks for your replies!

Hi it would be best to get 2, easier to integrate. Be careful if you dare go that auction :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)
