I once heard someone say their pears had 'gone over the top' , i didn`t think that they could have escaped.

Have you got a guilty looking dog ?

How annoying!  >:(

Had you recently checked on them or had it been a while since you last looked? If it was a while, they could have been attacked by some sort of flying rats... Unless some winged creatures had time to eat the whole lot, it does sound like they might have been 'half inched'... how high is your fence/wall and does it have spikes on it? I knew someone as a teenager who would regularly jump over his 8ft wall with ease!

No fence is high enough, no lock is secure enough against 2-footed rats who find swiping is better than working for anything. Next year cover the ripening pears with a complicated mesh system to deter all light fingers.

Can you think of any other creature that can strip a tree of pears and disappear without leaving a trace ?

I can't  :D

If you haven't been keeping an eye on them Wiskerman, they may have dropped off (ripe), and then of course they're fair game for quite a few beasts.

I'd say squirrels...I've been chatting to DD this afternoon, cos I went up to the lottie earlier and some of my sweetcorn have been completely stripped - he's lost some of his to squirrels... ::)

They are very agile, clever, determined little critters..with sharp nashers

I think it's what known as sods law, when you grow fruit and veg..you have to be prepared to lose some..

I'll be meshing my sweetcorn next year, that's for sure :)

We feed "our" squirrel with left-over walnuts, which we put in a willow tree. Pretty clever: he spends most of his time in it.
Until yesterday:   found him in the garden eating my blackberries
Maybe the walnuts are getting stale
