Fantastic site for a newbie like me.

What a fantastic site this is with an abundance of information.

I have for a while now been toying with the idea of keeping a few chooks at the top of our garden. We have a long narrow garden with allotments beyond. The top part doesn't get used for anything much other than a dumping ground so we thought it a great area for some chooks. It is shaded by trees and far enough away for the house (and neighbours). We have already discussed with neighbours about us keeping chooks and some free eggs seem to be very accptable lol.

We have slabbed an area of about 10ft x 10ft but after much reading on here I am wondering if slabs are ok?
We intend to build our own henhouse with all the useful info given from you lovely people on this site.

After reading Muntjac's "KEEPING CHICKENS , just the facts no sentiment allowed" which was very helpful (thank you) Ihave made a list of what we need and had already decided that we wanted Welsummer chooks so was pleased that they were recommended.

I will now spend hours reading the rest of the information on here.

I am soooooooo excited about getting my first chooks.

Thank you to everyone for convincing me that it is the right thing to do.

I don't think slabs are a problem so long as they are able to have some time every day in the garden so they can scratch around and eat grass etc, maybe do what some others have done and see if you can get hold of an old dog bed or large box and fill with dirt and sand so they can dust-bathe, they do love to do this, it's their way of keeping clean  :D
