I never thought I would feel this way, but the pride in filling a basket of produce for dinner a few hours later makes my day. I wish I was a housewife I would bake and cook for England

Oooh, Clareblues, does he have a recipe for his courgette risotto? Needing new ways to use them up!!! Getting inundated with them now!!

I love the fact that I can completely bypass the veg section in the supermarkets! I haven't bought an onion for several years now!  (It does however make my shopping basket look incredibly unhealthy!! )

Frog, I have raided his cook books and here it is. Serves 6

5 tablespoons good olive oil
7 young tender courgettes very thinly sliced with blossoms if possible
2 1/2 cups risotto rice
sea salt and freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 quarts vegetable or chicken stock kept simmering
2 tablespoons butter
2/3 cups freshly grated parmesan

method; In a large pan heat the oil and saute the sliced courgette and blossoms until tender ( about 5 minutes). Add the rice and stir it around until coated with oil heated through and shining. season with salt and pepper and then begin to add the hot stock stirring continually. Never add more than one ladleful of liquid at a time and wait for the rice to absorb it before adding any more.  You may not need to add all the stock depending on the quality of the rice. This will take about 20 minutes. When the risotto is creamy and velvety but the rice grains are still firm to the bite remove from the heat. Season generously with salt and pepper, stir in the butter and parmesan, cover and leave to rest for 2 minutes. Spoon onto warm plates and serve immediately.

It was delicious. When he gets home I will ask him if he does it by the book or if he tweeks anything.

Enjoy

What better way to give you a buzz!   Most of our meals over the past few weeks have included or been entirely made of our own produce, including the meat.
I am a housewife and am really enjoying myself lately, presenting the family with new dishes, or strange combinations of veg.
last night we had new pots, broad beans, courgette baked in oven with cheese on top and smoked bacon lardons from out own pig.  Dessert was rhubarb and plum crumble.
I feel SOOO smug!
i like to think too that filling ourselves with all these antioxidents will boost our immunities and protect us from swine flu.  We live in hopes, only time will tell.

think how much you are saving, we have just come home with a cabbage so big it wouldnt ever be seen in a supermarket, plus 6lb of blackberries that line the site hedges

I actually had a cabbage that filled the passenger seat of my car :D Like you say, not a prayer of seeing the like in a supermarket ;)

You've just reminded me, I need to hunt down the vicar and ask if it's ok for me to pick blackberries in the graveyard ... ohhh, and elderberries ... must remember them this year ;)

I know what you mean I went to Mor*re*sons this afternoon and couldn't help feeling a bit embarrassed as all that was on the conveyor belt was crisps, chocolate biscuits, beer, wine and loo rolls.  I grow all my veg and salad and I get all my meat, bread, eggs etc from the local farm shop.

Quote from home made pie 'all that was on the conveyor belt was crisps, chocolate biscuits, beer, wine and loo rolls'

I guess you can either give up on the crisps, chocolate and loo rolls and make it look really bad or start on line shopping with home delivery.

We have done the latter (careers to consider!) and its great cos the T*sc* deliveries guys always admire the contents of my raised beds so hopefully I get some 'growing your own' converts as well  :D
