do 2 week old chicks need a dust bath.
« on: July 06, 2009, 19:02 »
hi, i have just got my chicks they are just over 2 weeks old(all hybrids) they have just started to rub themselves on the straw like a guess an adult would have a dust bath, is this normal. i thought one of the chicks was off her legs but after a min of rubbing herself she got up and has been normal and active since. is this normal behavior.

Mine have been running about outside with their mum since about 2 weeks old, and they love a dust bath. It's really funny to watch them fluffing up their fluff

mine like dust bathing as well, but like yours they are outside with their mum so they are protected from the bigger hens (and from ollie our neapolitan mastiff who got too close for mums liking - never seen ollie run so fast with her tail between her legs after being charged at by a wing flapping squarking hen  not bad for a dog that got speyed just three days earlier).
Staffies are softer than you think.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Ours dustbathe in the shavings and in the 2 big dishes of chick crumb I give them for the first couple of weeks.  Luckily, now they have proper feeders, they can't dustbathe in the crumb anymore!    :D :D

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
