I'm a vegi novice
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:11 »
Hi. I am new to growing veg and feel a little out of my depth when reading some of your topics. Hope someone can advise me about growing swedes. Several weeks ago I got a pack of pre-grown swedes from a garden centre and planted them out as directed. 8 weeks later and they seem to be well established with plenty of leaves. However one or two have grown taller than the rest and seem to be developing flowers. This may be a daft question but is it necessary for swedes to flower or has something gone wrong.

Hi and welcome campanologist. Sorry your first post is bad news  :(

Im sorry to say that those are 'bolting' ie going to seed.  They were probably started much too early and with too much heat, and, coupled with transplanting (root veg dont like it) it has stressed them out too much and this has happened. You can snap the flowers off and leave the plant in, but it wont grow much bigger.  You can start some off from seed now to replace them

Thanks to you all. Now I know. I think I will pull those which have bolted and hope for the best with the rest. I will have a go at sowing from seed. If I start them off in pots in the greenhouse is it likely to be too hot for them with this fantastic weather. :

Just start them outside, no need for extra heat, they'll only take a few days.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
