Figs - What type is mine ?
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:50 »
I have had a fig in a pot for around 2-3 years and so far its not produced any fruit  :(

I have read that the most important thing to check with figs when wanting fruit is that you have the correct variety ("Brown Turkey" is suppost to be good).  Is there anyway I can check what type I have ?

I am very tempted to plant it on the allotment surrounded by a few slabs I have and see if it does any better down there.

Hello,

We have a fig in a large tub at home.  It has been there 3 years and I am only just seeing proper fruit on it.  Young varieties can take some time to sort themselves out.  Figs can be quite fickle though and you need to protect the first set of fruit that the tree produces each year.  Wrap some fleece around them when it comes to winter and they are the ones you will eat next year.  The ones that grow as a second flush in the season should be pulled off as they do not last over the winter and just take goodness away from the other fruits.

If you do move to the allotment the roots can get pretty big very quickly and can become invasive so it might be worth planting it in a contained pit.

Good luck.

Here are some photos of Brown Turkey so you can compare leaf shape etc. Hope this helps with ID  :D

Still not 100% sure what kind of fig I have.  I have taken a picture of it and its attached below.

i am going to plant it anyway on my plot (surrounded by 2' concrete slabs with 3-4" broken tiles in the bottom) and see what happens.
