I have a few elder trees growing and not had any problems apart from saplings keep sprouting up all over the place  >:( As for being toxic yes it is on the toxic list (or at least one type of elder is - there are several) be but my hens and chicks don't touch it - the wild birds though love the berries (hence the saplings!!)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I think the plant is supposed to be toxic to some degree but the berries are fine.

Good source of vitamins, but they'll have to wait their turn because that wine is on the 'to do' list  :D

I don't know if it is dangerous to chooks but flies hate the smell of it so it could be used, perhaps out of reach of the hens, to reduce the number of flies this weather is bringing.

we have an elderflower that was cut low last yr when we were clearing the land.  It has sprouted from the bottom now and is in the run with the hubbards.  They have had a good peck at it for 3 weeks now and are all fine and dandy, so I would say no, probably not
