I am growing veg for the first time so bare with me, as my onions are getting bigger its plain to see the top bit of the onion, i have heard  that i should keep them covered with a bit of soil so the white bit nolonger shows, is this right ?

Onions like to sit on the soil so no need to cover. If the white is exposed it will help the onions to ripen. The old gardeners used to say hoe the soil in towards root crops but away from onions
