Egga laid not in the coop.
« on: June 20, 2009, 18:11 »
I did try searching for similar threads   honest.

One of my hens is laying in the compost heap.    One is happily dropping it off in the nesting area of the coop and two we don't know about yet.

So...  how do I convince  the rebel to drop it in the coop and the other two to lay there as well.  (Worried they are laying it in the depths of the hedge where I cannot see it.  (If they have started....  May not have yet))

Any thoughts?

What set up do you have? are they free-ranging during the day? Do they have a house with run attached? If the later you might need to confine them initially in the morning until they get they get into a habit of  laying in the nest boxes. A couple of pot eggs or spare golf or pingpong balls might encourage them too. :)

Alas.   Softy me.  They run free.

They are into a routine.

I let them out in the morning at about 6am   Shower in the power shower, breakfast,  shoe-shine.   wake the kids up.

While they are doing this I am on the computer reading this forums posts.

My girls free range, but I don't let them out of their fenced area with the coop until after they have laid their eggs, well the majority of them anyway. Fortunately those that go out without laying then come back in later to deposit their egg, but I think that's because they are in the routine of knowing where to go. Doesn't take them long to adjust, might be an idea to keep them in until about 9 - 10am this time of year - mine have normall laid by then.
