Best to stick with the local gardening centre or nursery me thinks ;)

This, I think, is very true.... Nice to have handy, large supermarkets but they are increasingly driving out the smaller places. I'd hate to see oour local (very old) nursery go under as a result of the big boys competition - so despite a few trays from Tescthingy we will continue to support our local trader.  ;)

Just think how much profit places like B&Q, Tesco and the like must be making if they can afford to write-off so many bedding plants by leaving them to die simply for lack of a slosh of water!

I always complain to Customer Services (or anyone who will listen) when I see plants thirsty.  Quite often it gets the job done.

It's always worth a verbal  complaint, and at least the plants have a drink once in a while.

My local Band Q super store palnt are is very well looked after they are always around with the hose pipes and watering cans they have at least half a dozen hose reels on the walls.  I guess it depends weather or not they employ students or someone whos know what they are doing.  I have not brought one plant from them this year tho all self grown apart from a few bit been given to us.
Thanks
Kris

I think you're right..... if someone who knows what they are doing is employed by someone who cares then the plants are likely to be well looked after..

Still worth looking over the dying relics though; last autumn I got a tray of primulas reduced to £1 at B&Q; most survived and have just finished flowering after looking great since November, and are now large enough to divide so I can get more. Value.

I don't think my local Wyevale is much better. They have plants at 50% off that have been neglected - just needed watering a bit more carefully.  Plenty of their plants are not well watered - it seems that they come in in perfect condition, and then if the automatic watering doesn't happen to hit the plant it gets moved to the 50% off shelf ...

... and for most of the stuff there 50% off isn't going to shift it either! but I did get a couple of lovely Pelagoniums a couple of weeks back, put them int he greenhouse, potted up one size, watered well, and they were in the house looking smart within a week  8)

I've just "rescued " the last two gooseberry twigs from my local bargin store, along with some very well chitted sed potatoes.

Got the gooses in a bucket of water to try and help revive them a bit....so hope they survive

Don't leave them too long in the bucket .... half hour should do, an hour tops.

Clear plastic bag over the tops (but keep them in some shade), for a few days, might help reduce their transpiration
