tesco nightmare!!
« on: May 28, 2009, 22:34 »
went for a wander round the 'local' today and they have shelves of dead and dying plants. All for the want of some water! There were loads of wilted strawberrys, dying peppers and limp tomatoes.

What a waste - why do they bother?
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

My OH said exactly the same today...... such a shame that no one seems to bother.

Perhaps they need some expert advice.... we could team up and form an advice and action group to help these companies save money & cut costs so reduce prices.  :)

Perhaps they'd offer us cut price deals for helping out?

I have to admit here, grabbing a very healthy looking aubergine plant and running out, (via the till!).

But certainly there was a lot of rubbish. They'd got some Bizzy Lizzy planters reduced to two quid that were nothing but stalks.

At least the aubergine has gone to a good home!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Our Local store is the same. I think they must have hoped to sell them before they needed water. H&S, water spilt on a terrazzo floor, nightmare. Perhaps they should leave plants to their garden centre arm.

Seen similar in Wilkinsons, Pundstrtcher, etc. Thought these stores had dedicated people to look after each section. Perhaps they don't train them. Having said that I was very impressed with a lady on the gardening section at my local B & Q. She knew what she was talking about, about the products and was clearly very happy and well suited to her job

have you seen their profit results? I think Tescos can afford to do this for themselves. and iether do plants properly or leave it to the professionals!

My OH show me this the other day as we were walking round trying to find something to eat for dinner. When I saw the state of the plant I was quite distressed & seclared that I would never buy plants from Tesco.

If they want to go down that route then have a seperate area with dedicated people to look after the plants & sell them. I think they can afford that with the margin profit they take.

You don't see nurseries trying to become supermarkets, do you.

Tesco is probably trying to jump in on the grown it yourself gravy train.
Needless to say that I don't really like Tesco or agree with their philosophy. ::)

the plants in Tesco are also very leggy - obviously been forced in greenhouses. I'm not buying any.

Bedding plants there were a good buy - we picked them out carefully and used a special offer / deal to buy at = to half price.  :)

There were many that looked as if they were ready for the compost heap but ours (selected carefully) are doing well in the flower-bed!  :)  :)

I have bought just a couple and had to have a good ferret around to find some that were not dry, but saying that I took my sister to a garden centre last weekend and we bought a selection of plants and some had been very loosley potted up and very dry. Trouble is people who dont know what to look for get ripped off.

They had a cucumber plant reduced to 15p today.  If it wasn't for the fact I have 9 healthy specimens in the GH I might have been tempted!  Mind you, it didn't have any true leaves and the seeds leaves were shrivelled so I don't hold out much hope for it.

Focus is the same, tray upon tray of wilted plants and veg.

I wouldn't mind but the plants in the reduced section were in a better state than those at full price.
