Harry has a blue comb!
« on: May 27, 2009, 19:39 »
really not sure whats up with him.... he is eating and drinking,  but seems somewhat lethargic... looked to be almost falling asleep on his feet bless him... his comb is blue on the tips, and i think he was sick...just caught it out of the corner of my eye, but looked like a small amount of water at his feet....he has a mucky bum, looks white on his feathers. poos' look ok tho.

Put some poultry spice in the food, and am going to give him some cat food tomorrow....

any ideas?

Might be wrong Chooky but I always thought blue on the comb meant some kind of heart problem ???

Wait and see what other folks think I'm prob barking up the wrong tree :)

Hi chooknewbie,

I wouldn't give him catfood in case his kidneys have a problem, it as Vember says will be related to his circulation, sometimes a respiratory infection can have an effect on oxygen levels too, so maybe have a quick listen to his chest for any wheezing, rattling then a course of Baytril might be worthwhile. It may also be a good idea to pop him somewhere quiet for a few days, how many girls does he have??? might pop his clogs if he gets too excited right now...
Good luck with him! :)

he only has the one, and to be honest she is looking in fine fettle...all the other girls, be it ducks or chooks, are looking a little shabby round the corners from the attentions of their men, but she looks fine!! I would have expected her to be well and truely shoddy looking...!!

I dont think Harry will take too kindly to being lifted! I cant remember the last time i put my hands on him... he is a feisty lad, quite happy to give you a peck iffin you get too close!!  think i will have to go in with gauntlets!!

If i ring the vets do you think they will give me some baytril?? or will they want to see him?? Dont have a chook friendly vet near me.

try picking him up when its dark, he should be quite dozy then and easier to handle. the vet should want to see him, but you could try explaining the situation to them.

cant get at him when its dark..... he is down on the lottie and the gates are double locked at 9.00pm cos of the amount of break ins we have had.... I will see if i can tempt him across tomorrow... gonna try and spend the morning or afternoon down there and get some stuff done. hopefully he will let me hold him if he feeling a bit off his form... although am rather hoping he will have a peck at me, and the blue tinge will go as fast as it has appeared!

If he is a big lad then his heart cant take the strain now and again.  I had a warren cock bird who live to the grand old age of nearly 8!!!!  Most days he had a bit of a purple comb, some days totally purple but he would rest himself and not cover the girls(too heavy).  Didn't cover them at all in the last few years but was happy enough to just sit and watch the world go by.  If he is very heavy and big do not try to tip him over to have look at dirty bum though as I did that to mine one day and he passed out!  Too much strain on the heart.  May I add that he was none the worse for wear after a few mins.  Unless your guy has trouble in breathing due to lack of oxygen in his system I would not worry too much and let him live a happy life.  Any other desieses should be ruled out too.

thanks Mrs Ploppy... i think he is quite a big lad, but then i only have his brother to compare him to, and he is definately smaller than Jasper. will see if i can get my hands on him today, but then am frightened of stressing him out!! argh...lol... will take mealworms and see if i can tempt him with those.

well...been down on lottie for a couple of hours, and am still stumped. Managed to get hold of Harry, who settled comfortably on my knee...and as i was stroking him his eyes started closing, and he almost went to sleep!! I couldnt hear any problems with his breathing, at all...wasnt laboured, no wheezing nothing! his eyes are bright...its just his comb, his bottom being dirty, and the odd shake of his head...and i have to admit i havent heard him crow....which has just occured to me.  ???

To top it off i have had to split donald and daisy up, as she has hurt her leg and is hobbling about...so split the run in half with chicken wire to give her a break from his attentions     which will hopefully allow her to settle down and rest her leg... I have had a feel and she didnt complain or pull away whilst i handled her leg and foot, so am assuming she has sprained it...

what a mare!

Well glad that Harry has no obvious signs of anything wrong other that the purple comb.  Will be keeping my fingers crossed for him. Maybe it is just a fashion statement! Also sending my best to Daisy and hope she has a speedy recovery.
