Protecting peas
« on: May 16, 2009, 18:19 »
Would appreciate advice please  -- is there a height (of the peas not the pigeons) at which pigeons leave peas alone and nets can come off. I am approaching a net bottleneck with my brassica nets still on my peas and wonder if I am going to have to buy some more nets.
many thanks

Speaking from personal experience - I don't know any more!

In previous years my peas have been fine once they were about 3"-4" high and had the first layer of support twine in place.

This year I left them like that, they were OK for a few days, then we went on hols. When we came back, they had practically been stripped.

So now I have an area of about 26" x 20" totally enclosed in debris netting that I daren't take off. I'm pleased to say though that the patients seem to be pulling through.

The bluddy pigeons seem to take a fancy to more & more crops each year. I shall end up totally enclosing my plots.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you use twiggy pea sticks for  support I don`t think you`ll have a problem with pigeons.

Don't bet on it. They either walk around the bottom pecking your peas, or make a landing pad on top by squashing the foliage down.

If they don't yet, they'll learn.

Never had a problem in growing peas for 34 years, I`m obviously doing something right. :D

You evidently don't have our breed of pigeons!

I don't have any problems with pigeons either just the dreaded slugs but the beer traps seem to be keeping those down

I am grateful to you all. Looks like I need more nets. If I save my insect nets for the carrots and use debris netting on peas and brassicas then that should at least make the solution the most economical one. Thanks again
