newbie after some advicepls
« on: May 11, 2009, 21:56 »
Hi Am after some advice as to what I will need once the hen coop is up,I have been advised to treat hen house with a preventive powder for mite,What and which one?
What do i use for cleaning the hen house out with on  weekly basis and also should i use something else for  the main 6 mth clean, I have read somewhere jeyes fulid is used?
Also what do i use to keep the smell away as dont want to upset neighbours
Also Diatom is it worth sprinkling this around the insde of the hen house and also in the run? Last one for now poultry sheild-is this to kill or prevent red mite? is it also a cleaner?
Ideally I would like to know about the above and also if anyone could I wouldn't mind a check list of cleaners/preventive powders and any vitamins supplement i may need,
Oh by the way am getting 2 amberlink chicks
sorry the post has gone on a bit but just want to be prepared
Thanks in advance
Amo

Welcome to the mad house.
I have been advised to treat hen house with a preventive powder for mite,What and which one? See Red Mite below
What do i use for cleaning the hen house out with on  weekly basis and also should i use something else for  the main 6 mth clean, I have read somewhere jeyes fulid is used? Yes on a 3 month, 6  month clean use jeyes fulid liberally and wash out.
Also what do i use to keep the smell away as dont want to upset neighbours. There should be no smell if your run is big enough the bigger the run the better. 2m squared minimum per chicken more the better.
Also Diatom is it worth sprinkling this around the insde of the hen house and also in the run? See Red Mite below
Last one for now poultry sheild-is this to kill or prevent red mite? is it also a cleaner?See Red Mite below
Ideally I would like to know about the above and also if anyone could I wouldn't mind a check list of cleaners/preventive powders and any vitamins supplement i may need, Have a read of this forum. Use Apple cider vinegar, not from a supermarket.

Red Mite
Allot of what you have mentioned is for the control of red mite. It is a blood sucking mite that can literally drain your chicken of blood.  Make sure that your coop has removable perches. Fill all cracks inside your coop with decorators chalk or get a eglu.  http://www.omlet.co.uk/homepage/homepage.php
Red mite need wood or cracks to live in.  I have not heard of anyone with an eglu getting red mite
jeyes fulid, poultry shield, Diatom are all ways of controlling/ killing red mite.  Diatom  can be used on the birds the other 2 can not.  poultry shield and jeyes fulid work by removing the waxy layer from the body of the mite and therefore killing it.
Soultry Shield info found here (http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Poultry-Shield-Red-Mite-Eradicator.html#aP_2dS_2d1)
+ Revolutionary approach to controlling Red Mite in Poultry
+ Safeguard against Bird Flu
+ 96% red mite & lice killed in 48 hours including eggs
+ Effective against bacteria, virus, yeast and fungi
+ Environmentally friendly
+ Non-toxic
+ Use as a weak solution for cleaning feeding equipment
+ Can be used without removing the birds from the house, but DO NOT use directly on the birds.

All this information I have found on this forum. You can find it easily by using the search facility.  Try it you may find your answer quicker.

Hi Amo!
Welcome to the forum! (don't be scared, we are all mad, but we're very helpful too!  :tongue2: )

Stuart's post is brilliant!

I'd just like to add to the comment about keeping the smell down:
If you have a cover on your sizeable run, then it should keep out the rain, which will stopall the fresh poo being turned to a smelly mush before you get to it! (most of us have some kind of clear plastic - we have sheeting (so the sun can still come through)
My OH and I also pick up poo every morning and night (every morning because you always miss some on the night-time patrol): we use an old fire shovel and a stick.
don't forget to wash your hands afterwards!! (you shouldn't get poo on them if you use the stick, but good hand hygiene is always a good idea!)

and keep asking questions!
