Frosts?
« on: March 28, 2007, 20:54 »
So I am sitting on my hands and am trying to lay off planting (Although I did set some seeds the other day and have put them in pots in the poly tunnel on a  polystyrene board, no great shakes if they don't grow.)

So when you guys are talking about the soil warming up and there being no frosts you seem to be referring to late April early May, now I am confused by this because I though frost risk was only passed at the end of May ('ner cast a clout an all that!)  So when do we consider it safe to plant most things out, peas, beans, roots? other 'sensitive things?

Thanks
Lucyx

I think its a bit tricky this, there are a lot of factors involved. Soil type is one, if you have a clay based soil that normally holds more water and will take longer to warm than say a sandy or light soil, then you have the raised bed factor, raised beds again will warm before a flat bed, region will also influence this and finaly the crop, some crops like broad beans will go in before sweetcorn, so work out what is hardy, semi hardy (can be put under cloches) and then the not hardy. Once you get a feel for this you can start your crops off, best thing to do if you are on an allotment is to talk to the old boys or if there is an allotment nearby try going down and talking to someone, last resort is to pop into your local garden centre, the real ones not the B&Qs.

I'm wondering if Munty doesn't mean the end of April.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've just put in my early peas, 1st early pots went in last week, and my JA's went in 3 weeks ago ( but they look like slug fodder at the mo ).

Tender stuff like Tom's, Sweetcorn, runners, etc won't go out till last week of May.

I know you got four plots munty but where do you put it all ! I'm starting to think I've not enough room with one plot and run of the mill veg.
The vacant plot next to me might get a dose of roundup at this rate  :D

believe me mate it all goes in .its made room for in all sorts of ways  if you have a row of lettuce and or beet why not put a couple high obelisks over them to grow stuff up .the ends of rows are wasted space how many of you leave a foot or 2 from the path before you start sowing and planting out rows ?. walls can be used  as can the sides of bins greenhouses outside can have a net draped over them and more beans grown up them or even outside cucs ?
