Yet another Potato question!! Sorry
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:58 »
Right - off to Lotty tomorrow to plant the spuds.

All the old boys have lots of ridges and furrows, I know you have to earth up, but do I plant in the furrows and use the ridges as the earth up material or the other way round, only ever grown in bags before.

Don't want to look like the silly female newby ::)

Thanks
Julie

I think there are two possible approaches.

I plant on flat earth, then use earth between the rows to create a ridge over the growing spuds.

Alternatively, you could plant in a furrow, then pull earth across from ridges at the start of earthing up - this would probably result in a flat surface at stage 1, and ridges over the spuds when you earth up a second time.

I wouldn't suggest planting into the ridge at the start as it will be harder to get more soil on top at the earthing up stage
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I do what Yorkie does.  Plant on flat rows and earth up.
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks for that, will do it that way then, they must have planted early and have had to earth up already.

Hi

I was new last year & I had great results by planting with a bulb planter.

Adding potato fertilizer pellets in the hole, put some loose soil in, add your spud than backfill. Earth up a little.

PUP!
Top tip for camping....don't go.

I made ridges and furrows and planted in the furrows ... which killed all my spuds last year when it p*ssed it down and left my spuds underwater, but god loves a trier huh? :D
