Advice on this house please before I buy.
« on: March 20, 2009, 12:38 »
I really like the design of this house. ( e bay link )

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290304142005

I have 2 chickens at the moment in a house and run which combined is 7ft x 2ft3. They do roam freely in the garden during the day but if I am not there I want them locked in safe.

I want to get another 2 or possibly 4 chickens and I want the run to be as large as possible for them.
I have spoken to the seller of this item and it is 100 kilos weight, 34mm frame and 1/2" galvanised mesh.

I also e mailed a buyer from his feedback list who had bought the same item and although he hadn't put it up yet he did say it looks good quality and good for the money.

Please let me know if you think this is ok or just not.
Thanks.

Ooohhh, I almost bought this one but it would have taken up about a third of our garden!  I looks lovely, doesn't it?
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

It looks similar to one they sell in our localish garden centre.  up to 30 hens?  He has to be joking!  But for 6?  yes.  Even then, will they have a bigger run?  the garden centre had 4 hens in the run when we saw it and that was enough.  The other thing I would say is the perches don't look 2"x2", so you may need  a slightly thicker perch!!

But it does look nice!

They will have access to the whole garden if I am at home, I usually am. I just wanted a run big enough to house them if I am away from the house. ( If I pop to town or things like that ). I don't feel comfortable with them free ranging if I'm not about.
I wouldn't go more than 6 in it. The seller even said when I queried the number of birds that he wouldn't put more than 8.

I second what Annie says. It would be ok for 4 for limited periods. Maybe 6 will be ok. Be certain about it before you buy. It's a lot of money and it's important to your hens that it's right.
Sorry to be so negative  :(

For £250 you could buy a decent shed and adapt it. And still have cash left over to buy other things.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

It's 9ft x 6ft. My 2 are in a 7ft x 2ft 6 at the moment.
I would definately not go more than 6 and as I said it is really just to keep them safe when I have to be out. My 2 are wandering the garden at the moment. They will go in for 1/2 an hour at 3 when I do the school run but be out again when I get back.
