Poorly Alice Chicken
« on: March 16, 2009, 09:50 »
Alice the homing chicken is not at all well this morning.  When i opened the pop holee she didn't come out so I opened the house and got her out.  She is gasping for breath.  Her crop is large but doughy.  We've been to the vets who has given her a Baytril  injection and an antinflamatory and I've got a decongestant to give later.

She was running around the allotment yesterday, eating worms and helping me dig and this morning it's a case of if she lasts the next couple of hours.  I'm gutted/.  I've got to go to work now but I don't want to.

Alice has just died.  I gone to get changed to go to work and in that time she died.  Now waiting for the vet to say whether we need to treat the others as a precaution.  I'm stunned, shocked and upset.

Poor thing! But you have acted swiftly so dont give up! Could be sour crop or resp infection -either way the Baytril should help. Bacteria thrives in the contents of a sour crop, and can migrate through the digestive tract. Nystatin an  effective anti fungal is also prescribed for sour crop.
Have a look for other symptoms of a respiratory infection? Rattling breath, mucous around nostrils, swelling under eyes? If looking more like sour crop(check breath) maybe ask the vet for Nystatin over the phone, as he has already seen the bird for a consultation he might be happy too.
If she was out roaming for a while and hungry she might have impacted her crop with grass with has become sour.

Keep us posted Rae and good luck with the little madam! :)

Oh Rae I am soo so sorry!! Ignore my last post as I didn't read yours first! How awful.....
If you are up for it - please dont be offended -you could as the vet to have a look in her crop.

Thanks Foxy.  It's all been so fast.  Yesterday she was more than fine and had a lovely day.  She just seemed to give up this morning.  She was very warm so I suspect an infection.  I'm worried about the others now.  She wasn't with them last night cos they were still bullying her and they all seem ok this morning.  She laid a very ridged and crinkled egg yesterday.

I don't really want a pm done.  He though her crop wasn't hard enough for it to be that.  At least her last 6 months since rescue have been happy for her

Oh Rae poor you that's so sad- but the one crumb of comfort is she had a lovely day yesterday and didn't have to linger on going downhill.  Small comfort I know. x

Vet has said to watch the others and if  any more die to have a PM done then.  His diagnosis was a respiratory infection made worse by a crop impaction.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

I am so sorry for your loss.  At least you know that she had a wonderful day out in the sun and fresh air the day before.
