Double yoke
« on: March 15, 2009, 22:14 »
If a hen had a tendency to lay double yokes and she was put with a cockerel, do twins occur in the egg/chicken breeding world ?
I'm just wondering.

I think you would get one large chick or both would die as there is not enough room in the egg to develope.

Hi Eggy

I think if both yolks are fertile that although they might start to grow, it wouldn't go full term so to speak as there wouldn't be enough room for the two growing embryos.

The other thing to consider is the air cell would I think only develop as it would for a single embryo thus causing problems with moisture levels in the egg.

Sarah :)

Sorry Mrs Ploppy didn't see your reply till I posted :)

i've seen this question quite abit recently, and i can't help but be curious....

would it be cruel to try it and see?
in the name of science....

it's just that the egg wouldn't be incubated otherwise, so you could put the "it's a life anyway" tag on it (too philosophical?) and incubate it to see what would happen.

i'm desperate to find out....
