I just thought I'd add that our chicks live in a run that is the walls of an outbuilding, behind a tall kitchen garden wall and in front of woodland - they have a plastic sheet roof and a wide weld-mesh door opening (not open, obv!).  They also have a glass window (mostly broken panes, so relly a weld-mesh window) to the south side.
They seem to get plenty of sun when the sun is shining and it's really quite a bright place: they lay plenty eggs and are always ready to get out of their house in the morning.
you'd be surprised how well daylight can get through
plus, chickens were originally jungle-dwellers, so they probably prefer shade for the most part.
(as long as you let them out every now and then for the sunbathe...) (actually, I've seen mine sunbathe in the shade, so....)

thanks for that andrea , well i have seen the guy whos brought the greenhouse an he really seems to think that with 6 men it can be moved { will find out sunday} . but i have at least seen the new chicken house that will be going there in its place, a little 3'4 shed only £65 at b&q. it sounds small but it will be ideal as a little house for the odd few birds that are ill as this must be kept as a quarantine run only i must not get more birds  i have to keep telling myself that  .
