advice on nesting box design
« on: January 31, 2009, 19:49 »
Hi i have just started making my first chicken house and i read somewhere that its a good idea to incorporate a slope in the design to allow the eggs to roll away so the hen has less chance to start pecking at them.I can not quite work out how to do this i either imagine the laid eggs unable to roll as they are sat on top of a bed of straw or rolling backwards down a slope and smashing  sorry for being so dense has anyone got a picture of this type of design so i can understand how it works

sloping floors are de rigueur for battery hens to aid collection but TBH i have never heard of them elsewhere.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I had exactly those thoughts when designing (making up) mine btu came to the same conslusion and a year on, I'm pleased I didn't worry.
You can buy plastic inserts for rollaway nests but don't know the size of them. As you say, they just sit atop the straw and soemtimes get kicked into the house.

If you go ahead with it, post up some photos please. Would be intrigued to know an easy solution.
