Carrots in the greenhouse
« on: January 23, 2009, 23:20 »
I fancy gowing some early carrots in my cold green house in large containers. Any advice on best compost to use. I once read an article that they grow well in neat peat but tried last year and failed miserably

Here's a typical mix which the exhibition growers use.

45L sieved compost (Irish peat moss compost)
15L vermiculite
10L sieved coarse sand (silver sand)
6oz Vitax Q4
3oz Lime
3oz Seaweed meal

I suppose you could leave out the bottom 3  and the vermiculite and just feed with some Miracle Grow or similar.

It seems you need to sieve the compost so it's pretty fine in texture. :)

I think any sand will do as long as it's not got any salt in it.(Silver Sand is just used as it generally is guaranteed Salt free)

A lot of growers leave their sand, even builders sand in containers with holes in the bottom outside so the rain washes the salt out of it.

So,really any sand will do,you just have to get rid of the salt.

Having said that,Builders sand shouldn't really contain salt as this will kn@cker their mortar up,so that may well be OK,just check to make sure. :)
