I always boil up the veg trimmings for the hens, yesterday they had chick peas (mashed down) with a little bread added, as there was no veg trimmings, I poured boiling water over to make it a nice mushy mess,  the dish came back clean I´ve tried giving them carrot peelings ´raw´ they leave them.
We have an olive tree  and orange trees in the orchard bit where the hens freerange, the hens are busy eating the olives (they are black and very bitter) and the windfall oranges   So this time of year their poo goes a bit squiffy
When I go to pick an orange the hens go daft waiting for me to give them a segment

We give ours grated apple.
I think it's easier for them to eat because they can just gobble it up.  (yes, our chickens are _that_ lazy they don't like to peck at their food!!  - if it's too hard, they give up and eat something else)
Interesting note - used to try to get Jessica and Erica (originals) to eat grated apple and they wouldn't touch it: but as soon as Sandra (one of the new ex-batts) went and loved it, they all of a sudden really liked it..... :roll:

yes, at least it did with his. i think they couldn't be bothered pecking them but when grated they scoffed the lot.
