Got my 'Marco' Garlic
« on: November 19, 2008, 11:19 »
I was thinking of using the contents of a grow bag in a large tub  for this garlic, do I need to add anything to make it fertile???

The instructions on the garlic bag mentioned fertile soil.  (Can't you tell I'm a numpty at this lark so far)  :?

Thanks xx

Is the grow bag new? If not then you will need to add a fair bit to get it going again. I would say fill the tub up with 50/50 Growbag and well rotted manure/compost and chuck in grit as well to help drainage, they don't like being waterlogged and do like fertile soil.

I "think" For garlic you would probably need to add potassium to help the bulbs swell, late spring I would say when the plant needs to concentrate on the bulb rather than leaves.

That is just my opinion though, I'm sure there are lots of other ways/ideas to grow them. My soil is heavy clay and not too fertile but with the addition of compost from my heap over the past few years I have noticed a marked improvement.

Yes the grow bag is new, I have one with peat and the other without peat, which should I use and do I need to add anything  to it?

Thanks x

I personally would just bung the growbag in, i use peatfree (because its cheapest from B & Q), but i don't think it makes much of a differemnce to be honest.

A friend of mine suggested putting a cap full of diluted tomato feed as well for old compost.

Hope that helps.
