I've had birds that have gone from being black to white in three seasons of moulting. This is quite extreme but the answer is "No" they don't always moult into the colour that they were pre moult and its not just a matter of them moulting into cleaner fresher plumage.

As an example, here are two pictures of the same bird. This took place in just one moult. :D

Amazing change, Bodger! Excellent pics too!

Question: In the second pic the chook looks like it is wearing leg irons? What is that?

I'm in a similar position with my 2 ex bats (sarah & elle), for best part of a year they were quite distinctive and easy to tell apart.  Last few months though the differences have almost disappeared and now i'm only guessing who is who.

Sarah (i was convinced it was Sarah) has recently had a bout of sour crop and spent a couple of days inside house in a pet carrier though daughter was equally convinced it was Elle.  She's fine now BTW (first prob since Rita and her cancerous growth last jan).

Polly (my Sultan) is moulting at present, it must be blooming cold for her as she must have shed 3/4 of her feathers.  They are now growing back and she is the scruffiest chick you could ever wish to meet.
