Hi some time ago i was reading the forum and someone said that they never give thier hens meat scraps, well i dont either, i am a veggie, i dont do meat, but some times if i have people staying and have bacon in the house, i have given the hens a treat of the rind, and they love it, now why is it then you are not surposed to give hens meat scraps, my old gran used to give her hens all the household scraps,maet you name it, but she never gave them chicken leftovers, she always said hens eat worms and grubs, thats meat, so they are not vegetarians, and i have also read in the forum that in some cases you give the hens cat food, i cant rember why that is, orif its good for them TC

It's nothing to do with what hens should eat.  It's a DEFRA regulation and it is to prevent poultry and egg producers feeding their flocks on meat products (I leave your imagination to guess what that means) to hens and possibly transmit diseases that way.  Like BES was transmitted by feeding sheep remains (including brains) with scrapie to cows  :shock:

I figure if it is good enough for a human to eat it's going to be fine for a hen !

Any meat scraps here get demolished by our dogs TC  

As for the cat food, tend to give it to them to help at times when extra protein is needed ie when moulting

Well im now happy to give them the bacon scraps, as i said im a veggie so my household scraps are mainly vegtable, pasta etc, but i do have a back log of cat food that my cat dosnt like, so if my hens go into moult, i will give it to them, good advice on this forum, TC
