Blackcurrant Care
« on: October 06, 2008, 22:17 »
Hello everyone, I'm new to soft fruit and I have a bit of a newbie question, but you never know it could be useful for others to hear the answer too...

I was given a small blackcurrant bush back in the spring that had been cleared from an overgrown garden and had obviously never recieved much in the way of TLC, I planted it in a sunny spot in the garden in May and once it recovered from the move it gave me about a pound of fruit, I was very pleased, I had never had fresh blackcurrents and they were lovely with ice cream! the leaves are starting to die back now and I have decided that I want to move it to the allotment along with my Rhubarb.

So, here's my questions ("at last, get on with it" they all groan!):

Should I move it now or in the springtime?
Should I prune it in some way?
Would it be best to do this at the same time as the move?
Can I plant the prunings to increase my stock?
I assume a shedload of muck in the hole at planting time would be the right thing to do?

Please help! Thanks.

Brian.

My (inherited) blackcurrants have all got that virus that they get from big bud insects, so they have to go. They are pretty ancient anyway. :o
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Moving a black currant

Wait a bit and move it when it is completely asleep - optimal time is end of November or December.  Cut back hard and lift with as much soil as you can (but don't rupture yourself).  Plenty of good, well rotted stuff in the hole at the other end.  Should be fine
Good luck
