Growing veg in North Cumbria
« on: September 12, 2008, 12:50 »
My Mum would like a veg garden so now I've got some experience from my own I'm going to use up my holidays setting up one in a couple of weeks.  She lives near Brampton, Cumbria, close to the Scottish Border in an old farmhouse so plenty of sun, space etc.

Anyone else from round those parts that can offer advice?  I plan to set up some Bord-a-link raised beds, she says the soil is rather clay-bound, if I'm doing 4 2x1m beds what sort of quantities of grit am I going to need to dig in, if any?  I'd expect there'd be a lot of horse muck available round her area so I'd plan to dig the soil up well to a foot or so, dig in muck, build the beds and top with the best compost/grit/soil mix I can get.

Any advice gratefully received and I promise to post pics when done.
