Soil advise
« on: August 28, 2008, 07:58 »
Hello budding plotters,
can I please pick your brains, my plot has never had veg grow on it previously the ground was covered with shrubs that had got out of control slightly, they have now been cleared but the ground looks dark will be doing a drain away test this weekend  my question is would it benefit from manure being dug in this year ready for planting in spring. If so would I be limited to what I wanted to grow.  (Hope that make sence)

Thank you
Maria

You will need to add manure, doing it now will be perfect, you will need to plan where you are going to plant/sow your root crops as you mustn’t manure there or the carrots etc will fork.

It should be OK to just spread new-ish manure on top of your soil and let the worms deal with it over the Autumn and Winter, then dig / rotavate the soil in Spring. The older the manure the better but doing this now gives it 6 months to rot down before planting.
