Blossom rot on Tomatoes
« on: August 16, 2008, 15:58 »
On a tomato thread a few days ago, I,m sure I read a post about blossom rot, but I can't find it now.  The bottom of some of my toms on one truss
look a bit brown (yellow plum ones).  Is that blossom rot and if so what causes it, will it spread and can I prevent - sorry thats a lot of questions !

Sounds like blossom end rot, it is caused by irregular watering.

you are right it was on a post, like you I cannot remember which one. But I think it has something to do with irregular watering or either to much or not enough. I use ring culture and have a watering and feeding regime. and so far I have never had the problem  :D

Blossom end rot can be caused by either the compost becoming too dry or from over watering and feeding too much. Try to keep the compost evenly damp on a consistent level and only feed the correct dosage of tom food once every 7 days ( I do sundays for my tom food day) and at least two ordinary waterings in between feeds :) Pick those toms off as they won't really be good to eat. It's caused by an inability by the plant to take up calcium I believe.

I tend to water from the bottom unless it's feed day and I try really hard not to get water on the leaves or the fruit.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that.  I have watered regularly each day, and fed the growbags  (I do mine on sundays as well).  I think they may have been too wet some days.  Having looked again at the trusses, some of them are so full, i wonder if they are pressing against each other.  I have thinned the biggest out to let the smaller ones have space.  Have removed  the iffy ones as you suggest and rubbed out the little sharp blossomy bits from the bases.  Will watch the watering more careful now, perhaps I have been drowning them  !!  Thanks to you all for your advice.  Mrs Bouquet

i decided to put one of my blossom end rots in the fruit bowl.  the rot doesn't seem to be spreading or getting any worse and the tom is starting to ripen.  will be interesting to see how much is edible inside once its red and i'v trimmed the rotten bits off.

bit of an experiment really.  another i picked off had gone too far tho and the surface had broken already.  the one in the fruit bowl i caught quite early.

Blossom end rot doesn't spread like a disease does. It's just a rather ugly condition the tom gets and cannot be cured. It stays that black hard lump until you cut it away.
