I don't need to hedge my bets with so many choices.

It's a crab apple. Stake my pomological reputation on it

That's more like the voice of an expert  :D

2. Italian Alder has more heart shaped leaves.
3. Doesn't look much like a snowberry either.

Crab certainly tallies with most of the suggestions so far.

Well snowberry leaves certainly are very similar, wavy edges, but the leaves are usually in pairs, and those are alternate (which is why its 3rd choice)

Italian Alder (NOT Grey Alder or Alder Buckthorn) leaves are identicle, AND they are alternate, but tends to form a compact but tall tree - not the little squat affair you have there.

If it grows catkins in february, its an alder. Otherwise its Crab Apple, Pear or Cherry Plum (need to see fruit/flowers)

Not alder for my money.  They have a slightly serrated edge.  Furry stems are right for pear and apple. Could be pear but the leaves are not folded enough.  My shilling is still on crab apple.

Well have to wait for spring,

MulesMarinair, have you looked under shrub in the litter to see if there are any clues ?

Just to have my twopenth

the top leafs are slightly fuzzy underneath ( bottom leaf on the left ) and are non serrated along the edge notice as well the fuzz on the stem

Bottom picture the leaves are hairless and have slightly serrated edges, no visible fuzz on the stem.

 = different plants  :D
