Hi Geoff.

Must post photos when you feel it's finished !  :)

Our pophole is 12" square with a horizontal sliding door.

As long as you can fasten it securely and it will close without leavign large gaps which will cause draughts, i don't see that it matters which method you use.

As long as it's effective as a door and a ramp, easy to open and close and will last as long as you need it to, you should do what suits you.  :)

Maybe it's better to do what suits the chickens?

...and that as well.  :D

But it does need to be practical and effective too. No point having something that's awkward to open at 6.30 on a rainy morning !

So do bear in mind how you will operate it as well as how the chooks will be able to get in and out, etc.

Our pop hole is 12" tall  8" wide. Like Rob said make sure you can secure it at night and its easy to open. Mines on a pulley system I got a little carried away

I'd love a pulley system !  :)

Mine is on a long stick system.  :?   Got a piece of batten that drops into a notch when it's closed, so Mr Fox can't nudge it open. But you can't beat the satisfying squeek of a rope and pulley.
