I need to get hold of two or three runner bean plants but I know its  a bit too late to sow any more , Here's why....
I planted some easy care veg for my 85 yr old mum who is widowed and not too well (beans, courgettes, tomatoes in pots) to add a bit of interest as she really isnt feeling brilliant at the moment. Runner beans are her favourite ever veg.. and I'm not joking.
All were doing well until yesterday when she got someone in to do some weeding and and HE PULLED UP AND THREW AWAY HER RUNNER BEANS! He was there again today and unable to explain why - he didnt even seem to have noticed he'd pulled up some healthy plants twining their way up a tepee of canes.
I was actually very upset - so I am tryind to find a few plants to replace them. None in York Wyevale ...
So if anyone spots any in a nursery or plant centre in the York area please could you let me know - or if you live in the area and could spare a couple ... I could swap for courgette aubergine  yellow tomato or purple sprouting  plants
I'll try a note on freecycle too. Any help or beans gratefully received. J

I know you ideally would like runner beans but Suttons have what they call speedy French Beans! On the packet it says 6~7 weeks planting to harvest!! I am trying them this year. They are the non climbing French Beans that would also be suitable for containers. I know its just an idea but I thought it might be worth mentioning :) I actually chitted mine first it took 24hours for the roots to show in the airing cupboard.

i sowed some of the above last week and I have 4'' plants now, which I have just planned out. Might be worth a try if you cant source potted plants.

Thanks - sounds a good idea and I will get some of those anyway - I think I have found a garden centre with runners but some French beans too would be nice. My mum just LOVES all green beans. Thank you so much for the suggestion and advice. J

hi there, we are in hull , 50 miles from you , you have plenty of time to buy more beans , sow them outdoors where they will grow ok , we plant 2 beens per pole , your beans will be producing fruit ( beans ) untill september , even october if there is no frosts ,

Have you tried Brunswick organic nursery - they do veg plants (got my red cabbage and some sweetcorn from there this year)?.

They're just the other side of Bishopthorpe.

And open every day  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Polly -  you could try Orchard Nurseries which is in Hopgrove Lane (turn left by the Hopgrove pub going out of town on the Malton Road. They certainly had runners last weekend.
