Hi!
We've been thinking about getting hens for a while. We have a 6 x 8 shed which we're going to convert. We're also going to build a run for when we're around but not outside. Also they'll be able to freely roam the garden when we're outside.
How many hens minimum should we get? I read somewhere that getting too few is as bad as getting too many as they won't be able to keep themselves warm. By the way, we are cladding the shed on the inside so that should help.
I hope someone can help.

Your minimum advisable is 3 because they enjoy company and if anything happens to one, there's still 2 left.
Other than that, the maximum would be, in theory, 3 or 4 dozen, based on the 1 sq ft per bird rule.
How big is your run going to be ?

The more space the better bernard. I'd say between six and dozen would be about right.
