how many chickens can you keep on a 40 acre farm? bearing in mind they have to share with 5 horses 2 ponies, 32 sheep (and lambs) 2 dogs and 5 cat's. oh and 3 kids.

just got back from my rescue mission, out of the remaining 20 i left with 8,  the farmer had given 6 to a woman, he said he wasn't sure he should have let her have them as she intended to keep them in a rabbit hutch, i wanted to point out that it couldn't be worse than the conditions they were already living in but kept my mouth shut, 3 had to be necked as 2 were poorly and 1 had a broken leg, 2 got out and he couldn't catch them, and he didn't know what had happened to the remaining 1. anyway i had to smuggle them on to the farm as i thought my dad might say enough is enough,  although what he thought i was doing humping a picnic hamper (took the picnic things out first, and got 6 in) and a cat box (2 in that) across the yard in the pouring rain is anybody's guess, of course i could have told him i was taking a cat on a picnic but the feathers sticking out of the air vents might have given it away. we let the 2nd bunch of chickens (the 30 in the cow shed) out for the first time today, there on the other side of the farm to the first bunch (27 in the hen house in the paddock next to the house) it will be interesting to see if they go to bed in there respective homes or if they all get muddled up. Ali C  and Cockaloo are still stable bound as is Lonely, they are american barn type stables with  5 boxes on each side with sliding doors, (3 with chickens in) i open lonely's and she's quite happy pottering about in there all day.  38 eggs yesterday and 24 so far today, going for lunch now, what shall i have? oh i know poached eggs on toast, again.........................

greedy? he not only scoffed my dinner  i caught him stealing the cats, i sneaked up on him and walloped him with a headcollar( not hard) but being the coward he is he yelped and has now gone off in a huff.......
