No chance of leccy fencing for us in the near future.

Rob

What's your thinking, Rob?  I'm trying to work out if there's a practical reason against having it in a suburban garden or whether it's just that it feels a bit industrial ...
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

I doesn't really have an industrial feel to it-thats if you buy the 25m dark green netting which blends in with garden. You can always chop it down a bit to create a smaller run for when you are not around.
Gravel boards about 4 inches from the edge will stop hedgehogs getting caught if you have them.
A good point pushrod made  is that in effect you "train" the fox to keep out.
Finally yes it will cost around £100 probably a little more but some of the runs I have seen are very expensive too!
And if people can afford the igloo that surely this is a very worthwhile additional expenditure

Merely a question of economics !  :)

I've got some pallets coming sometime so I may try and knock up a bit of a low fence to supplement the mesh. I feel somethign solid, if well fixed, is better than any wire fence. Providing they can't easily climb it and get over the top. I know they can chew through timber but I've not seen anywhere what minimum thickness so I should think a 3/4" plank fence should slow them down a bit.  8)

Thanks, both of you - I shall have to look into it a bit more, I think.  Being in an urban setting I'd rather make sure the fox doesn't get into the garden at all than just concentrate on making the run fox-proof - I've seen plenty of foxes around the city at 2am in the morning when the girls are safely tucked up in bed, but I'm told there's one not too far away from us that has been seen in daylight.  And particularly when it's getting dusk I'd like to know that the girls are safe even if I'm a bit late getting out into the garden to put them away.

And guess what, Foxy - I sprained my wrist this morning, hurts like b**ggery, and I have to type one handed  :(  - so should stop me rambling ...so much

Just locked away the girls to find our cat, who was scared of the chooks, climbering up one of the 5ft corner posts on the run.
I wouldn't fancy her chances if she got in there with them. Have to keep an eye on her. She nearly had our visiting duck this morning.  :?

Obviously not feeding her enough.

There's a large lake behind teh houses opposite and we get a few mallards every day. Our most regualr though is a female with a limp who has been bothered by half a dozen males for months, even when she had her one true beau at her side, she was attacked repeatedly.
I spent most of April chasing them off til she'd come to me for protection !

We feed her and have a tray of water for her ablutions. We're hoping she'll lay some eggs and bring he chicks to visit but no sign yet.

The dog has learnt to leave her be but the cat has got it on her at teh moment and chased Mrs duck through the hedge. I think she needs a good talking to.

I'll post some piccies for you if you like. Not tonight though.  :)

You make it sound as though it's an optional extra, Rob     You know the rules; let's just say by this time tomorrow and we'll say no more about it, shall we  :?:

But more to the point ... peacocks...bees...ducks.....

..... is there anything that DOESN'T come to your garden for rescue  :?:  :?:
