Dilemma - to swap plots or not?
« on: June 06, 2008, 08:40 »
The answer should be obvious so I need someone to shout at me for being silly.

Out current plot had since April. Had chickens on 1/3 and nothing else.  We have put a shed on and planted several roughly dug beds with oinions / runner B's / BNS / Pumpkins / Strawberries. The rest has weeds and is covered with plastic.

We have option to swap at the end of the year to the one opposite to ours which is worked by a man who is a stickler for presentation, so all the beds have been worked and are nicely surrounded by painted wood etc.

so why am I still tempted to stay where we are?   Am I being stupid by being lured by something we have created ourselves from scratch???

It really does depend on why you are doing this.. if its for personal self satisfaction along with the physical product then I would stay put... you have something across the way to benchmark against  ;)

imho MOVE   .  What is the point in battling the weeds for years, years of backache, possible heartache when paradise is next door, then you can concentrate on growing veg, watching them grow and eating them. I will be moving myself at the end of this year too, why? coz I now have a plot over my back fence instead of driving 4 miles down the road, I have had my old one for around 6 years, yes I will miss a couple of allotmenteers when I do move but the new one is already a winner.

It's a bit like buying a new house isn't it?  The obvious thing is to buy the one that's all done up and 'needs nothing doing to it', but I always end up with the wreck that needs renovating from top to bottom instead.

Why?  Because I know that while it looks good on the surface, when I actually move in the colours won't quite suit my furniture, the light fittings will be in just the wrong place and, above all, however long I live there it won't ever quite feel like mine ... until I've stripped the whole lot out and done it my way

Listen to your instincts - and have a good hard look at the plot across the way - is it actually laid out the way that will suit you? Would it work for you?  Or will you end up doing all the same hard work in the end anyway?

Hmmm...I'd have to say stay. It will be hard work but you'll get sooooo much more satisfaction when finally your plot looks just as good as the other one, and you know it's down to all your effort and love than if you just moved onto a pre-established plot instead.

Just my 2p!

I had the opportunity to swap plots at the end of last year but I have put a lot of work into our plot. The other plot had a decent shed the full width of the plot which could have doubled as a greenhouse but I couldn't bring myself to move. Looking at it now, I've put a lot of work in and it's finally starting to pay off while the other plot is full of horsetail. I've also got the whole plot in production because I ripped down the old shed and created new beds with the wood.  I have problems with horsetail too but all the digging is starting to get it under control. I can look over our plot and feel satisfied that we've put a lot of work in but it's now becoming the most productive on the whole site.

All I would say is that I would not change my plot. We have put so much effort into half of what was an overgrown no shed full of rubbish plot since March there is no way I would give it up for something even it was better. Its like a labour of love. We had so many giggles getting to where we are now ~~ full of happy memories!!  ITS MINE ALL MINEEEEEEE !!
I cant wait till its finished and I can put more effort into growing veg!

I just took my plot on, and Ive got to say that If I had the choice of one done up or mine, Id stick with mine, because its all MINE! And I will be able to say its all MY own work!

However if I had one nearer to me at the same size then I would swap, but thats the only reason :-)

Is there any good gardening reason to move, like bigger plot, better position, better soil? Otherwise, WHY?

I moved plots twice with good reasons, still, kinda regretted it a bit, there was always some catch.

On the first, I needed a shed, shed turned out to be full of rats  , the garden is full of clubroot.

Second time, much windier garden  , full of ants.

And it took a lot of time and effort to move.

Now, if i were being offered both plots it would be no contest I'd take the new one on in a flash, but to swop after putting in a lot of work?  No, I'd still stay where I am.  mine was relatively well maintained before I took it on (though full of annual weeds and loads of bindweed along the boundaries), but it wasn't so well maintained that I felt bad about changing things to the way I wanted them.  If it had been I'd have felt obliged almost to keep things as they were and then its not your own plot really is it?

Thanks for the opinions - we are staying.

We will never know what could have been, but at least we won't move and regret it!

I agree, it will be all OUR WORK!
