my seeds are emerging!!
« on: May 08, 2008, 21:20 »
it seems that after weeks of doing nothing the little seeds I have planted are starting to emerge!!  even the peas I planted about  a week ago are poking through. If only i could recall what in fact i had planted it would be great! what would also be great would be to realise why rows of potatoes are planted as far apart as they are. I know they have to be earthed up but forgot this when I planted them. am now having to carry soil across the lottie to cover them as I have seeds planted too close. live and learn!!

I forget what I planted where by the 2nd row, so now I have a pile of flat sticks on hand whenever I seed. Soon as the variety is planted, I use a Gardener's waterproof marker on the sticks to label exactly what I just put in, and another to mark the end of that planting. The 2nd one can be used as the marker for the next seeds if I don't plant a whole bed of something. The sticks are about a foot tall (30cm), enough to stick solidly in the ground and support any fleece I might lay on top. At summers end, I just gather them and reuse, or use the other side next season.

Forgot to mention that the sticks I use were actually leftover scrap wood we split with a hatchet for kindling. The kindling bucket 'somehow' ended up in the garden while I was planting

What seeds have you planted too close to be able to earth up? If they are too close to earth up, they may get crowded out when the spuds grow.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
