Last week I had a double yolk egg from one of my girls. What does this mean? It was a great surprise!

It means you were lucky!!!

Seriously though, in my experience "it's just one of those things" - one of my chickens laid a double yolker every 3rd egg (it was a Sussex White - or the French equivilant from the guy down the market)

We did try various "experiments" to try and get more and found that cooked potato peelings greatly increased the frequency of double yolks but it wasn't something you can guarantee.

Friends of ours swear by prawn "peelings" - certainly their yolks are very yellow and they do get double yolkers but no more than me (not that I'm counting   )

Lucky you!
Just out of interest do bantams lay double yolkers?  Mother hen laid 2 eggs in 1 sitting, maybe thats the bantam equivalent.

i've heard that its more common in older and younger birds, they have two ovaries the same as female humans and whentheir hormones kick in (in youn uns, ) and hormones go all over the place (in the older ones), their ovarian cycles  get out of stride. sometimes ovulating twice. hence two yokes in one shell.
a hen is an egg's way of making another egg

No she hasn't got a mate :(
So I got some from the internet they are Romans.
I'm hoping they'll get on?????
Crumb is sitting her in-fertile eggs every night so I'm hoping when the real eggs start to externally pip i can do swaps and she'll think they're hers!

It'll be a long night as I'll be staying with her to make sure everyones ok.

Getting quite excited but also trying not to in case something goes wrong

Roll on the 15th of May :D
